Do i need to have Microsoft.Net Framework 1.1 on my Win xp system?

The .NET Framework is only required if it's needed by whatever software you want to run. You don't NEED to download it from Windows Update for any security reasons.

If you do ever try to install software that needs it, it will tell you it needs it, and you can download it at that time, or the software may even be able to install it for you.

No, you need to have .NET framework 2.0. .NET 1.1 was the previous version. Some programs will not function without it. If you have been running Windows update... as I dearly hope you have been, you already have it. If not... run Windows Update and you will get it. Of course, a Google search will turn up a number of places you can download it.

I realize you don't have to get it from Windows update, however, it is easier to get it from there than tracking down a third party download site.
There are some programs that require this to run. I have run across a few.
