What is Microsoft .NET Framework and do I really need it?

Microsoft .NET is just a set of libraries some programs need you to have installed in order to run.

From a user point of view is just a component Microsoft developed after Windows XP was launched, so it is missing from the basic installation of Windows XP.

.NET has become a new standard for developing Windows applications, so it is not strange that some new applications you install into your computer require you to have it installed too. But installing it is very trivial, you can do that from Windows Update.

So, to make it short, if no program asks you to install .NET, just ignore it, it does not add any extra functionality to your Windows.

Most likely yes, as a lot of software written now rely on it to function correctly, think of it as a library that your software need to refer to
Its a kind of a Virtual Machine to run computer program (written in .net). This way not as much code is needed and the program is smaller.

Really you don't need it. Windows well work fine with out it. There might be some programs that need .NET but you would figure that out once those programs are installed (or they would let you know that you need .NET).

Windows Vista has .NET built in, so its becoming more common.
